Linking already download game files to steam

I did not use the steam back up as it did not appear to be wanting to work correctly, instead i just put these who games onto another HD. Now im trying to figure out how to get Steam to read the files as being installed already. Ive already put the full files back into the 'common' folder, and the games themselves, at least, TSW works, its just not linking to steam, even though the game itself was a gift through steam haha.

The correct answer was not to try to install it again, at least, not with your The Secert World files in the common folder, as steam just instantly without chance of rolling back unless i undo loads of system updates, deleted the 40 gig TSW file and replaced it with a 2g one..

All you generally need to do is copy the files back then select the download - it should detect the files already there and not download anything. The only option is to purchase the game as a gift if you already own it. Steam does not offer a universal way to transfer games purchased elsewhere.
