Prey had three hours of music. Even at three hours, people didn't realize just how much music there was as this extra amount allowed the score to work more seamlessly with the game. I think games in the future will ship with five hours of music.

By contrast, your average feature film only has between an hour and two hours of score. Films and games share more musical things in common in that the subject matter is really epic. Television tends to stay with more reality based ideas and smaller concepts. I don't feel like the quality of television music in general really compares to films or games only in that a bass guitar riff in Seinfeld just doesn't need to be much more than what it already is.

Films and games on the other hand, are routinely blowing up the world or going to some distant universe or time. Insider: How closely do you work with the developers to decide the feel and style of you compositions? What is your relationship with Gas Powered games? Jeremy Soule: I love working with Chris Taylor.

Chris gave me direction on the military feel he wanted for Supreme Commander in sort of an indirect way with one exception; if you like snare drum, you can thank Chris for that sound in the score as that was the one thing he specifically requested. For other aspects of the score, Chris and I would talk about life, games and pretty much anything except music.

This was his style and his way of dialing me into what he was looking for in the game. He really just wanted to put me in the right mind frame by talking in broader strokes. He's very open and direct about what he likes and I always felt he had total confidence in what I would create. There's a big difference between the settings in Company of Heroes, Supreme Commander, and say Oblivion.

Do you spend time with the writers and artists to get a feel for each game before creating the accompanying music? I personally met with designers and artists to get a sense of the momentum of each of these games.

All three of these scores feature a symphony orchestra but they differ greatly in musical structure. Insider: How different is the approach you take to composing when you work directly with a live orchestra or with keyboards and synthesizers in a more personal environment?

Do you prefer one way to the other? Jeremy Soule : I almost prefer to work with synthesizers these days as they can create a unique sound that identifies me with my work.

I also love to perform each instrument in the digital orchestra just so that everything is honed to my vision as to how the score should sound. On the other hand, world-class orchestras are really wonderful in how they bring an unpredictable element to musical performance. An orchestra is like a sports team. I'll write a play and the team has to execute within a margin of error. In some ways, I feel like a coach in that I have to know the players and how they will approach specific challenges.

The instruments are also a factor.
